Interrelatedness of Health
While your health typically refers to an absence of physical illness, wellness involves a balance between all aspects of health.
Physical health refers to how well your body functions. It is more than being able to touch your toes or rake the leaves. Physical health also involves your ability to recover from injuries like a broken bone, fight off infections like a cold, and cope with daily stresses like homework.
Mental and emotional health involves your thoughts and feelings. If you have good mental and emotional health, you probably have good self-esteem and a positive attitude toward life. Being able to express your emotions and cope with stress are important skills for wellness.
Since humans are social animals, interacting with others is essential to our wellness. Social health refers to how well you interact and get along with other people. Social skills and healthy relationships can provide you with the tools you need to enjoy life and meet its challenges.
Your physical, mental and emotional, and social health are interrelated. This means that one aspect of your health interacts with and affects the other aspects. They all work together to create your health and wellness.
For example, if you struggle with low self-esteem, you do not have good mental and emotional health. Poor mental and emotional health can negatively affect your sleep, diet, and activity level, which are all involved in your physical health. Poor mental and emotional health can also lead to a decline in your social health by preventing you from forming friendships or joining your favorite activities.
The impact of one aspect of health on the other aspects does not have to be negative. For example, if you want to improve your physical health, you might eat healthier and get more physical activity. This can improve how you feel about yourself and help you face challenges with a positive outlook. It can also help you make new friends by providing new, fun activities to participate in.
Your well-being is a state of health and wellness in which you generally feel good about your present condition. Since each aspect of health is related to the others, if you are in a state of well-being, you should engage in behaviors that promote all aspects of your health.
